Conducting Classes

Mon May 11, 2009, 6:56 PM
So my college (Hanover College, in Madison, IN)does this wierd thing where, instead of getting out at the beginning of May, like every other normal college in the country does...we go to one class (yes, only one)for the entire month and submerge ourselves in that subject. Its called "spring term". So far my experiences with "spring term" have been quite interesting. Ranging from conducting lessons with my crazy Bulgarian professor, to exploring the seven Waterfalls around campus, to watching the fraternities compete in organized drunken wiffle ball games.

The one class that I have decided to take for the month is called conducting and literature. It is a two hour class that takes place every week day morning. My instructor is hilarious...She is a Bulgarian Choral professor who is trying to drill into us the art of conducting an ensamble. She is very intelligent and has a grammy (pretty cool). The woman has the heart of a little kid. For example today we got sidetracked for about an hour and she jumped around (literally jumped) singing the voice parts for an accapella song that she had stuck in her head mixing up the English words with Bulgarian ones. Needless to say my mornings around here are very interesting. I'm definitely not wasting any of my time if I come away from the class with a good laugh.

As for the waterfalls, they are b-e-a-utiful this time of year. Everything is blooming and it is so green around campus. The only trick is trying not to fall off of the rocks or cliffs when your hiking. Its pretty steep and can be very dangerous. Ohhh I love it. Danger on college campuses...there is no limit. A perfectly normal campus is usually swarming with idiots as it is...now we are suddenly mixing giant cliffs and waterfalls into this equation. Nothing good will come of this. Some poor girl fell off of the top of one of the larger cliffs at one of the waterfalls a few years ago...it was about a fifty foot drop and she came out of it with only a broken leg. Pretty lucky if you ask me.

As for the Lambda Chi Alpha anual Wiffle Ball tournament...well that can be pretty self explanitory. Fraternities, and unaffiliated people of all sorts, a sport consisting of a bat and a ball, a giant grill, and boys and girls that have consumed copious amounts of alchohol. Very interesting to watch, especially if you're one of the only sober ones around like I always am. Its more fun to tell other people how stupid they were when they were drunk. Plus it gives you impecable black mail material.

Well, this is how my "spring term" is going so far. Hope everyone is off to a great start with summer...I will eventually be joining you at the end of the month.
